Joseph H.Pilates (1881-1967) was born in Germany , he developed the Pilates exercise system in the 1920s.
Pilates is pronounced as Pi –LAH – teez
As a child he was very sick and fragile and became determined to strengthen his body and improve his health. He had a background in yoga, Zen meditation, martial arts and as a gymnast, diver and boxer, Joseph Pilates devised a sequence of movements - The 34 Classical mat Exercises Pilates which are used today.
Joseph Pilates died in 1967 due to smoke inhalation.Today health care professionals study and implement his work when teating patients.
He further developed his wellness regimen while interning in England during the First World War, claiming it helped him and his fellow internees resist an influenza epidemic.
