Many of us lead sedentary lifestyles and the thought of regular exercise is something we would prefer to ignore. However, persistent neck, shoulder and lower back discomfort will ultimately force us to escape our office chairs in search of relief. Manual labour no longer provides the opportunity to strengthen core muscles, i.e. the group of muscles at the centre of the body encompassing the abdomen, lower an upper back, hips, buttocks and inner thighs.
Developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1900s to strengthen mind and body, Pilates is an increasingly popular exercise regimen that uses controlled movement and breathing to tone and strengthen the body irrespective of age or fitness level. The six principles of Pilates are concentration, control, center, flow, precision and breathing.
